If you’re a homeowner in the Sacramento area considering solar and battery storage, SMUD offers one of the most attractive utility-level incentive programs in California. Through its My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program, SMUD encourages customers to add battery energy storage systems to their homes and participate in a community-wide effort to support the grid and renewable energy integration.

To participate, you must be on SMUD’s Solar and Storage Rate (SSR) — a rate plan designed specifically for customers with solar and/or storage systems. Under this rate, battery owners are eligible for Partner+ incentives.

As part of the program, SMUD works with Swell Energy to aggregate customers’ battery systems into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This means SMUD can dispatch stored energy from participating homes during times of high grid demand — helping strengthen grid reliability and reduce reliance on fossil-fueled power sources. In exchange, participating customers receive financial compensation for their contribution to grid stability.
